Explore the Rich History of Herbal Medicine

Herbal Medicine is considered to be the oldest form of medicine in existence. It has its roots in ancient times, and depending on where in the world you look, you may even find documented evidence of its use. Today, many of these herbs and spices that have a long history of traditional use have been tested and incorporated into mainstream culture and even medicine. For example, simple Aspirin has its roots in Willow Bark, a traditional remedy for joint pain.

We at Synergy Bioherbals believe that these herbal traditions have value. Sure, there are modern strides in medicine that are amazing. It doesn’t have to be “one or the other”. We believe that there is something wonderful about these classic words, and they can easily complement our lifestyles to improve our health.  Here’s more information:

Introduction to the History of Herbal Medicine

For example, countries like India and China have proven, long-standing herbal traditions that have been handed down through the centuries. The oldest herbal medicine text that we know of originated in China – The Devine Farmer’s Classic of Herbalism, which has been dated to be over 2000 years old.

These aren’t the only countries that have had rich, long-standing herbal traditions. Simply choose a country and you’ll find a folk herbal tradition that likely has ancient roots. For example, in Greece, many herbal traditions can be traced in Ancient Greece. In the United States, there’s a rich herbal traditional left behind by the Native Americans.

There are  so many examples of this throughout history, but the point remains the same. These herbs and spices have been around for centuries, and people have benefited from them for just as long as they’ve existed.

Here’s a quick summary of herbal medicine through the ages:

We just wanted to give you an idea of the herbal traditions through the ages:

  • Early Evidence. The earliest use of herbal medicine took place in Egypt and Mesopotamia and can be traced as far back as 3000 B.C where they documented their herbal use on clay tablets. Egypt had the Ebers Papyrus, an early medical document that talks about herbal remedies, that is dated back to 1550 BC.
  • Ancient Greece. For the Greeks and Romans, they built on foundations laid by the previous cultures’ herbal traditions. In Ancient Greece, Hippocrates, who is called the “Father of Modern Medicine” left behind a body of work that included information about healing herbs. He inspired Dioscorides, a Greek physician who write in the First Century AD. His work inspired healers in Europe through the Renaissance.
  • Eastern Tradition. We touched on this, above. The Ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic traditions have been around for thousands of years. The Chinese are credited with one of the oldest herbal texts (mentioned above) and Ayurveda has its beginnings traced back to about 3000 years ago.

Of course, this summary just gives a big picture perspective. There are many herbal traditions that can be found throughout the world that didn’t make it to this list. These examples are just to show you how these ancient traditions have stood the test of time. We still use many of them today.

Here at Synergy Bioherbals, we’re playing our part to honor these traditions with our 4 Herb Synergy Gold II formulation. Please visit this page for more information. Before you get started using herbal supplements, please consult with your doctor just to be safe.
